Anyway, as it occurs, I am slightly modified in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I have actually struggled with higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I’ve mainly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does assist. However could e-counselling not only re-hinge my mind, but do so without me having to put trousers on and leave your home?
And pulling back from my own (fairly low-key) problems for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health issues escalating among under-30s? With cuts to mental health services actually starting to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who currently filter almost every element of their lives– pals, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.
Not everybody is completely persuaded that moving mental health care online is the way forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you fulfill someone in person, in the very same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not only what it resembles to speak with the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Utilizing Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, however it does not develop the nearness, the intimacy, that really gets people to open up and check out things.”
” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly crucial that individuals who participate in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the room with somebody, speaking in person.”
” In regards to availability, it’s a good start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually showing up in the space. If you’re having a hard time with relationship issues, attachment concerns, or deeper issues, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the web offers a range from your counsellor that might not be handy.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
If it’s rolled out just to save cash and there aren’t critical concerns being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m constantly extremely sceptical of individuals who are either very extremely pro or really extremely against online mental health care.
I signed up for four extremely different online psychological health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, simultaneously, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is reviewing my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in simply one week. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!
How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), United States company is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least three years of experience.
After filling in a questionnaire to ascertain what specific flavour of psychological you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instantaneous messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on until one of you eventually died.
What does it cost?
You get a totally free seven-day trial – much like a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more questions about what your youth was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for endless message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s totally free either, but whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through immediate messaging might be helpful if you discover the concept of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You will not get the exact same connection as with in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it easier to open if you’ve been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first established the scale of my stress and anxiety, what triggers it– social circumstances, fulfilling people for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious youth (separated parents, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her job, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is impressively slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty sometimes, but it was in fact a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I anticipated. I even got rapid actions to messages over the weekend, which was unanticipated.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The truth you can modify messages before sending them implies you’re not likely to blurt out something vulnerable and revealing in the heat of the moment. Extensive minutes of realisation may be hard to come by if you can’t get a relaxed flow going.
Who do I think it might it be good for?
Anyone with a low-end psychological health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and require severe attention (and possibly some meds), probably isn’t for you Talkspace Raised $31M At What Valuation
